What is a domain name?

A domain name is the address to a server on the Internet in a form that people can remember, such as www.regeringen.se. It could be said that the domain name is a pseudonym for the IP addresses that machines use to communicate, such as http://194.14.70.181/, which is the same as www.regeringen.se.

The name I wanted was taken. What should I do?

If you do not want to completely change the first name that you had in mind, you can try using a hyphen, as in “summer-pictures” or adding a word like “family”, “my” or “Stockholm” before or after the name. You can also add numbers to the name. If the name you want included the written characters å, ä, ö, é or ü, you can try using and excluding the dots or accents in the domain names. What can I use my domain name for?

Your domain name is your identity on the Internet, regardless of whether you use it for a personal website, your company’s website or to obtain a personal e-mail address.

In a survey conducted by .SE, the most frequent reasons for obtaining an independent domain name were as follows – note that several reasons could be given.

  • For a website – 75%
  • For a personal and independent e-mail address – 33%
  • To prevent others from registering the domain name;  protective registration – 13%
  • For blogs -7%
  • To resell the name – 4%
  • Other  – 31%

How much does a domain name cost?

A  registration with .SE Direkt costs SEK 350 including VAT (SEK 280 excluding VAT). There will also be an annual fee, which currently is  SEK 225 including VAT (SEK 180 excluding VAT). You can choose to pay the annual fee for your domain name for several years at once. Make this choice in your account in the DomainManager. Read more about multi-year payments here.  .SE Direkt does not provide any additional commercial services such as web hotel, e-mail, hosting or similar services. If you have such services connected to your domain name, you pay each supplier for these.

How many characters can a domain name have?

A .se domain must include at least two and not more than 63 characters.

What characters can I use in my domain name?

A .se domain can contain the letters a-z, å, ä, ö, é and ü, the numbers 0-9, hyphen, any of the characters of the official Swedish minority languages or the languages of our Nordic neighbors. For a complete list over all of the valid characters, see the IDN character list.

What is a suitable domain name?

A suitable domain name is a name that functions for you and those with whom you want to communicate.

Regardless of whether you are an individual, association or company, a suitable name should express your own identity on the Internet and be easy to remember. It should be self-evident – the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about you or your company.

The most obvious alternative may be to register your own or your family’s name as a domain name – thus providing you with the same identity online and offline.

Do I have to register my domain name with .SE Direkt?

No. .SE Direkt is one of several “registrars” for domain names ending with .se. You can choose another registrar if you would like. You can find a list of registrars here.

Through your registrar, you can manage all of the administration of your domain name. Your registrar in turn ensures that your domain name in included in the registry that is managed by .SE (The Internet Infrastructure Foundation), which is ultimately responsible for ensuring that all .se domain names function.

.SE Direkt is .SE’s own registrar, thus making it a safe and stable choice of registrar. However, note that .SE Direkt does not offer web hosting or similar optional services.
