Information about DNS

To be able to use a domain name for something as for example a web page and for email addresses one needs to enter the name servers that should answer for the domain name.

This is done in our tool the Domain manager if one has a domain name with us according to the description in the help pages. The help pages are available on the top right in the web tool  the Domain Manager.
Note that the only thing that should be entered is the name of the name servers. Add one new name server at a time and then remove the old name servers. As the maximum number of name servers is 5 one might need to remove old nameservers to be able to add new name servers.

If one enters a name server that resides directly under the domain name an IP address is also needed, but then a new input field is presented where one can enter an IP address in that case. An IP address for a name server is called a glue record.

DNS consists of a number of different types of DNS records. For example there is an A record for the web servers IP address. There can also be a CNAME post which is an alias for another name. MX record is for the email servers IP address.

The name servers are also DNS records. It is only these records that one should update with us and it is also neccesary to administer possible DS records if one uses DNSSEC for ones domain name. More about DNSSEC here: http://www.sedirekt.se/en/registrera/dnssec

Administration of other records than name servers and DS records one needs to handle with the DNS operator one has for ones domain name. The DNS operator is in most cases the web hotel that one uses for ones domain name, that is where one has ones web site and ones email addresses.

When one performs an update of the DNS records one administers with us as name servers and possibly also DS records it takes a while before the updates are available out on the internet.

If there has not been any information previously it will not take any additional time, but when an update is performed the new information is not used until the old information expires.

How long the old infromation is valid one needs to check with ones DNS operator.

New information is sent out from .SE every even hour but then it is as stated a matter of how long old information is possibly kept.
