FAQ

What is the difference between .SE Direkt and .SE?

.SE Direkt has been a part of .SE (The Internet Infrastructure Foundation) since March 9, 2009, when .SE switched to a new business model. .SE is a non-profit organization that is responsible for the Swedish Internet top level domain .se, meaning all Internet addresses that end with .se. In addition to responsibility for administration and technical operation of the national domain name registry, .SE works to achieve a positive development of the Internet in Sweden. .SE Direkt is .SE’s own registrar operation.

Is .SE Direkt an independent company, separated from .SE?

No, .SE Direkt and .SE are an identical legal entity. .SE (The Internet Infrastructure Foundation) is the name of an independent non-profit organization that is responsible for the Swedish Internet top level domain. When the new business model is introduced, we will divide the current operations into two sections: .SE Registry and .SE Direkt. .SE Registry will then be responsible for administration and technical operation of the national domain name registry. Domain names are sold through resellers, known as registrars. One of these is .SE Direkt, that is, .SE’s own registrar operation.

Will .SE Direkt offer hosting and name-server services?

No, .SE Direkt will not be offering hosting and name-server services. Longer term, however, there may be opportunities to offer supplementary services.

Why should I choose .SE Direkt if it costs more and does not offer supplementary services?

By introducing the new business model, .SE wants to increase its customers’ options, but does not want to force domain name registrants to enter into agreements with another registrar. Accordingly, customers will be given an opportunity to continue as a customer of .SE’s internal registrar, .SE Direkt, in connection with the switch. For those customers who choose .SE Direkt, everything continues as usual, they have their domain name administration at .SE Direkt and administer their other Internet-related services either by themselves or through another supplier. As of March 9, all new customers are being given the opportunity to register a new .se domain directly with .SE Direkt. A registration with .SE Direkt costs SEK 350 including VAT (SEK 280 excluding VAT).  There will also be an annual fee, which currently is SEK 225 including VAT (SEK 180 excluding VAT). Our prices are probably more expensive compared to other registrars. The reason for that is that. SE Direct does not want to compete with the other. SE registrars.

How many customers do you expect to stay at .SE Direkt in March 9, 2009?

Initially, we estimate that at least half of all registrants of .se domain names will stay with .SE Direkt, which is the equivalent of about 200,000 customers and slightly more than 400,000 domain names.

Why do customers who have not made an active choice end up with .SE Direkt following the switch?

By introducing the new business model, .SE wants to increase its customers’ options, but does not want to force domain name registrars to enter into agreements with another registrar. Accordingly, those customers who do not actively choose to switch to another registrar remain as .SE customers until they choose to move. They can do this at any time. Information on what to do is available here.

Is .SE Direkt a temporary registrar for a limited period or does it intend to remain active long term?

.SE Direkt is a long-term alternative.
